(Mar 13) NWBC News Release - Council crack-down on litter and dog fouling

Eight people in North Warwickshire have been issued with on the spot fines for dropping litter or failing to ‘scoop the poop’ and clear up after their dogs.

Six dog owners from Atherstone, Coleshill, Hurley and Polesworth received £80 fixed penalty notices after being spotted by the Borough Council's Dog Warden.  Two drivers in Dordon and Maxstoke were also reported for dropping litter from their vehicles and received the same fine whilst two more cases are pending.

Councillor Hayden Phillips, Chair of the Community and Environment Board commented:

" Complaints of littering and dog fouling remain far too common, despite good results like these.  It is only a small careless minority causing problems for our communities, so with a bit more public support we could see much cleaner streets and parks."

David Baxendale, Environmental Health Manager, added:

" Our Dog Warden and Neighbourhood Wardens are now being more proactive and very much more effective in catching people, so we want local residents to support them.  Report any incidents in confidence,so we can target our time and efforts where and when the offences take place.  Each fine is ploughed back into the service to provide a cleaner and safer environment. “

The wardens have also been giving out the occasional bonus - when they observe somebody scooping the poop, they have received a free sample of 50 bags for their good behaviour and setting an example.

To report incidents in confidence, go to the website at www.northwarks.gov.uk, email environmentalhealth@northwarks.gov.uk  or ring the Borough Council’s main number on 01827 715341.

Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Action Organisation

Website:  www.wcava.org.uk

Tel: 01827 718080

The Warwickshire CAVA is very active in Kingsbury and all the surrounding villages.

Basically it acts as a sort of umbrella group for anyone who runs (or is thinking of running) any sort of volunteer or community group.  CAVA can advise on setting up a group, staying within the law, getting funding or grants, looking after the books and paperwork, and all the other administrative issues that might arise.

CVS development workers visit Kingsbury regularly, and "outreach" sessions are held in Kingsbury at frequent intervals where people can get free advice.

Tel: 01827 717073

Website:  www.vcnw.org.uk

Acts as a bridge between people who want to help out in their local community and voluntary groups who need new volunteers.  The VC keeps a computerised list of volunteering opportunities throughout North Warwickshire, and makes sure volunteers are properly treated.

A Volunteer Centre worker is in Kingsbury Library every Monday afternoon, but there are details there at all times.
